Hunting F. Deutsch was the Florida Secretary of the Department of Economic Opportunity. He was appointed by Gov. Rick Scott (R) in April 2012 and resigned on December 4, 2012.[1]

Deutsch spent over 30 years working in the senior-level of the banking industry. Prior to his appointment as Florida Secretary of the Department of Economic Opportunity, Deutsch served as executive vice president of wealth management at BankUnited Financial Corp. and president of BankUnited Financial Services from 2006-2009.

He also worked as executive vice president at AmSouth Bank in Alabama from 2003-2006, was managing director at Citigroup Private Bank in Miami from 2001-2002, and spent 20 years at SunTrust Banks Inc. in Orlando.[2]

Political career

Director of Economic Opportunity (April 2012-December 2012)

Only eight months after his appointment, Deutsch resigned his post as Director of Economic Opportunity after questions were raised regarding jobless benefits he received prior to his appointment. He received unemployment benefits from September 2009 to May 2011, during which time he took a trip to Europe. Deutsch refused to answer any follow up questions from news organizations, stating, "Quite frankly, it's a personal matter."[3]

In appointing Deutsch, Scott stated, “I am committed to making Florida the number one state in the nation for job creation, and fostering a climate that promotes economic development is key. Hunting has a strong and experienced background and I am confident he will do a great job as the head of DEO. I welcome Hunting to our team.”[4]
