Born and raised in Southeastern Michigan, I learned the values of hard work, faith, and community from my working-class immigrant parents, who came to this country to build a better life for our family.
I’ve spent most of my life fighting for human rights, in 2001 co-founding the International Solidarity Movement–a global organization focused on challenging government oppression, ending human rights abuses, and standing up for the freedom and dignity of oppressed people in my parents’ homeland of Palestine and around the world. In 2004, the organization’s work was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
I moved back home to Michigan to work as an attorney for several years at Goodman Hurwitz & James, a prominent civil rights law firm.
Now, I am running for Congress to fight for the rights of my community at home and to make Michigan a place where every single Michigander, not just the rich and well- connected, can not only survive but thrive.
- During my time in Palestine I witnessed flagrant, systemic human rights abuses; now I see human rights abuses around me in Michigan every day. They’re not the same, but people are being abused and people are being denied.. This is because our policies do not center people and they do not center human rights. I want to be a voice and a conscience for the principle that we must put people at the center of our policies both foreign and domestic.
- I’m tired of seeing the rich getting richer while we’re told there isn’t enough money to invest in and uplift the rest of us. Michigan families want and deserve good, well-paying jobs, affordable healthcare, quality schools, safe neighborhoods, resilient infrastructure and healthy communities and I will fight to get these things and more done in Washington.
- I’m the daughter of working-class immigrants and I’m grateful that my father found a union job as a UAW auto worker. He worked hard - never turning down an opportunity for overtime - to support our family of seven. We didn’t have a lot, but we were not in want of anything. Today, people are working as hard as ever and cannot make ends meet. This is unacceptable. No one who works 40 hours a week should have to worry about being able to buy groceries, keep a roof over their head, or afford health care. Hard work should be rewarded with opportunity to not just survive, but thrive.
