Campaign themes

2016

Baird's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Fiscal Responsibility:

  • Guys, our state is not fiscally responsible. The glaring example; Minnesota had a $900 Million surplus this year. Yet leaders were so intent on spending the whole thing that they couldn't give a single penny back. Guys, that's your money, lawmakers owe it to you to be responsible with it. Every dollar that gets taken out of your pocket is a dollar you can't use, and honestly, I think that the vast majority of people spend their money better than the government does. My plan is to be responsible with your money so that you can have more of it. By the way, my opponent is the chair of the Senate finance committee, so he'd be a good guy to hold responsible for our irresponsible fiscal policy.

Transportation:

  • Care to guess how much money the state of Minnesota put towards roads and bridges this session? Zero dollars. That's zero, with an o. Enough with the political gamesmanship already, our roads need work. We here in St. Paul shouldn't be forced to suffer because of legislative hobby horses. Have we all heard enough about trains yet? Trains are great for some places, but in Minnesota they just don't make sense. I live less than a mile from the green line, and I've used it about four times. It's never saved me any time. Let's use a little common sense and put some money in our roads and bridges. We of all people should know how important it is.

Education:

  • First; Let's keep our teachers safe. They sacrifice a lot for the kids they teach, and they deserve that from us. Second; let's make sure we have the best teacher we can. The Last-in first-out policy for laying off teachers is antiquated. Our students deserve teachers who are there because of merit, not seniority. I've heard genuine horror stories from friends of mine involved in education about teachers who just don't care about their jobs anymore, but can't be let go because of these practices. conversely, some of the best young teachers get let go because they lack seniority. By clinging to this practice we are being flat out unfair to our kids. Third; let's make it easier for parents to move their kids to better performing schools, and that includes charter schools. This needs to be entirely a parental decision, they're better at picking out good schools than a government bureaucracy. I think if we implement these common sense solutions we can make education better for all students, including minorities. The best way to close the education gap is through common sense. My opponent thinks that there's a correlation between the education gap and the fact that we don't have many minority teachers in Minnesota. So he wants to put a racial quota on teachers. He's right that there's a correlation, but he's got it backwards. The reason we don't have minority teachers is because we haven't been giving minority kids the education that they need to pursue dreams like teaching. If he had tackled the education gap thirty years ago, when he first became a senator, then maybe we'd have more minority teachers.[1]
