Idaho District Court

The Idaho District Courts are trial courts of general jurisdiction in Idaho. Appeals of District Court decisions are made to the Idaho Court of Appeals and in some cases directly to the Idaho Supreme Court.

Jurisdiction

Idaho District Courts hear felony criminal cases and civil actions if the amount involved is more than $10,000. They will also hear appeals of decisions made in the Magistrate Division.[1]

Districts

There are seven judicial districts in Idaho.

Idaho 2nd Judicial District Clearwater, Idaho, Latah, Lewis and Nez Perce
Idaho 3rd Judicial District Adams, Canyon, Gem, Owyhee, Payette and Washington
Idaho 4th Judicial District Ada, Boise, Elmore and Valley
Idaho 5th Judicial District Blaine, Camas, Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka and Twin Falls
Idaho 6th Judicial District Bannock, Bear Lake, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida and Power
Idaho 7th Judicial District Bingham, Bonneville, Butte, Clark, Custer, Fremont, Jefferson, Lemhi, Madison and Teton

Judges

There are 42 district judges and 87 magistrate judges in Idaho.[1] District judges are elected by voters in the district to four-year terms in nonpartisan elections.[2]

A February 2011 analysis by Forster-Long, LLC published by the National Association of Women Judges indicated that 11% of the judges serving on the Idaho District Court bench are women.[3]
