Two of the five seats on the Idaho Falls School District 91 Board of Education in Idaho were scheduled to be up for by-district general election on May 16, 2017, but the election was canceled due to lack of opposition. In their bids for re-election, incumbents Larry Wilson and David Lent were the only candidates to file to run for the Zone 1 and 2 seats, respectively. They were re-elected to the board by default.[1][2]
The 2017 election followed a pattern set by the district's 2015 election. Both years had every incumbent file to run for re-election, and both years saw every incumbent run unopposed. Click here to read more about election trends in the district.
Elections
Voter and candidate information
The Idaho Falls board of trustees consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Elections are held on a staggered basis in May of odd-numbered years. Three seats—Zones 3, 4, and 5—were up for election on May 19, 2015, and two seats—Zones 1 and 2—would have been up for election on May 16, 2017, if the election had not been canceled.[3]
Idaho school board candidates had to be at least 18 years old, eligible to vote in the school district, and residents of the zone they sought to represent.[4] To get on the ballot, school board candidates had to file by March 17, 2017. The withdrawal deadline was April 1, 2017.[5]
Citizens of the school district could pre-register to vote in this election until April 21, 2017. Same-day registration was also available.[5] Photo identification was required to vote in Idaho.[6]
