Incumbent Mike Bost (R) defeated Darren Bailey (R) in the Republican primary for Illinois' 12th Congressional District on March 19, 2024. Bost received 51.4% of the vote, and Bailey received 48.6%.

The district had an R+24 partisan lean in the Cook Partisan Voting Index (PVI), making it the most Republican-leaning district in Illinois.[1] Bost, who had represented the district since 2015, won re-election in 2022 with 75% of the vote.

According to WBEZ's Alex Degman, "[the] candidates have a lot in common — both are staunchly Christian and hold strong, conservative views on abortion rights, the Second Amendment and immigration. The difference may be in their approach — Bost calls himself a 'governing conservative,' which means he stands for conservative values but works with others to pass legislation. ... Bailey says Bost's experience and his collaborative approach are precisely the problem."[2]

Bost was first elected in 2014 when he defeated incumbent Bill Enyart (D) 53%-42%. Bost previously served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1995 to 2015. He also served as an electronic specialist in the U.S. Marine Corps and as treasurer of Murphysboro Township.[3][4]

Bost highlighted immigration, abortion, and gun policy as key issues.[5][2] Bost also contrasted his legislative experience and governing approach to Bailey's. Bost said, "Our real issue [in Congress] is to try to gain ground where we can gain ground and actually govern from the small majority that we have. … Unfortunately, we have people that are more interested in being on social media to get likes and also who work to get on a 24-hour news network."[2]

Bailey, a farmer, previously served in the Illinois House and Senate. Bailey was also the Republican nominee in the 2022 Illinois gubernatorial election, when he lost 55%-42% to incumbent J.B. Pritzker (D).

Bailey focused on gun policy. He said he would "die on [his] front porch before [he gave] away [his] Second Amendment rights" and said the Illinois Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card system was "an infringement that was designed to pilfer money."[6] Bailey also criticized Bost's government experience. "If we want to fix the problems in Washington, we must change the people we send. My opponent has spent 40 years in government and a decade in Washington," Bailey said.[7]

Former President Donald Trump (R), U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), and U.S. House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) endorsed Bost. Bailey's endorsers include Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.).

As of February 2024, The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales, and Larry J. Sabato's Crystal Ball all rated the general election as Safe or Solid Republican.

The filing deadline for this primary was December 4, 2023.

This is one of 15 elections across the country in which Speaker of the U.S. House Mike Johnson endorsed a Republican candidate in a primary race. Twelve endorsees have advanced from their primaries. One endorsee withdrew. Three of these races have not occurred. To see a full list of these endorsements click here.

Key Messages

The following key messages were curated by Ballotpedia staff. For more on how we identify key messages, click here.

Bost contrasted his legislative experience with Bailey's. “The people of the Illinois 12th actually have a voice that is heard... Not a person that’s there to say ‘No,’ and also that has no experience whatsoever in getting legislation moved,” Bost said.

Bost said his positions on abortion and gun policy were representative of his conservative bona fides. "I’ve got a 100% rating with pro life. I got 100%, and I’ve always been endorsed by the NRA and every other gun group out there," Bost said.

On immigration, Bost said: "The invasion at our southern border is out of control. Terrorists are walking right into our country. Border patrol agents are being overwhelmed, all while Joe Biden continues doing nothing about it. I’m fighting to bring back President Trump’s America First policies that kept us safe."

Key Messages

Bailey said Bost's government experience was a liability. "If we want to fix the problems in Washington, we must change the people we send. My opponent has spent 40 years in government and a decade in Washington. I'll fight to secure our border and put Southern Illinois and America First," Bailey said.

Bailey said he wanted to reduce restrictions on gun ownership. "I will die on my front porch before I give away my Second Amendment rights. ... I don’t believe in restrictions, particularly the Illinois Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card system, an infringement that was designed to pilfer money," Bailey said.

On border security, Bailey said, "It’s time to demand action, finish President Trump’s border wall, and give the men and women serving in our border patrol the resources and support they need to accomplish their mission. My opponent has spent 10 years failing to do this and has voted to grant amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants multiple times."

Post-filing deadline analysis

The following analysis covers all U.S. House districts up for election in Illinois in 2024. Information below was calculated on 2/16/2024, and may differ from information shown in the table above due to candidate replacements and withdrawals after that time. </noinclude>

Forty-nine candidates filed to run for Illinois' 17 U.S. House districts, including 24 Democrats and 25 Republicans. That's 2.59 candidates per district. In 2022, the first election after the number of Congressional districts in Illinois decreased from 18 to 17, 5.59 candidates filed per district.

In 2020, when the state still had 18 Congressional districts, 4.1 candidates ran. In 2018, 4.4 candidates did.

The number of total candidates who ran for the U.S. House in 2024 was the fewest since at least 2014.

All incumbents ran for re-election this year, meaning no seats were open for the first time since 2014. In 2022, four seats were open, and one seat was open in 2020, 2028, and 2016.

Six candidates—five Democrats and one Republican—ran in the 7th district, including incumbent Danny K. Davis (D). That was the most candidates who ran for a single district in 2024.

Eleven primaries were contested in 2024—five Democratic and six Republican. That was the fewest contested primaries since 2014, when nine were.

Five incumbents faced primary challengers—four Democrats and one Republican. That was also the fewest since 2014, when three incumbents faced primary challengers.

The 4th District was guaranteed to Democrats because no Republican candidates filed. The 15th and Illinois' 16th Congressional District were guaranteed to Republicans because no Democrats filed.
