Illinois Attorney General election, 2010
The Illinois Attorney General election of 2010 was held on November 2, 2010. Incumbent Lisa Madigan (Democrat) won re-election over Stephen H. Kim (Republican) and four independent candidates in the general election.
Primaries were held on February 9, 2009. November 2, 2009 was the deadline for filing nominating signatures.

Green Party - Rockford attorney David Black
Libertarian Party - Attorney and publisher William Malan
Independent Christopher Pedersen and Constitution Party candidate Louis Cotton were removed from the ballot on August 17 and August 27, respectively.[1]

- Lisa Madigan, having already served two terms as Illinois' Attorney General, rebuffed aggressive efforts by national Democratic leaders, among them President Barack Obama himself, to recruit her to run for the United States Senate and announced in July 2009 her plans to seek re-election.[11]

Time line of events
The following is a time line of relevant dates to the 2010 Illinois Attorney General race:
- July 2, 2009: DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett, who had lost to Madigan in the 2002 AG contest, announced his run for Illinois attorney general in 2010.[17]
- July 10, 2009: Birkett retreated a bit from his earlier announcement supposedly declaring his candidacy for the state's attorney general race, saying, "I didn't formally announce, but I was indicating I would not be a candidate for governor and was looking at the attorney general's race, and that's the way it stands right now."
- July 8, 2009: Incumbent State Attorney General Lisa Madigan declined to run for the United States Senate, opting instead to run for re-election in her current position.[11]
- July 17, 2009: State Representative Jim Durkin, who had been considered both a potential gubernatorial as well as attorney general candidate, announced he would be seeking re-election to the State House of Representatives rather then campaign for a statewide position. He added that "he would have considered running for the attorney general were Lisa Madigan not running for re-election."[18]
- August 2, 2009: DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett believed the race against incumbent Democratic State Attorney General Lisa Madigan was 'unwinnable' and therefore announced he was withdrawing his name from consideration.[19]
- September 8, 2009: Stephen H. Kim announced his candidacy for the GOP nomination in the AG contest.[14]
