Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the Illinois State Board of Education reads:[1]
| “ | Provide each and every child with safe and healthy learning conditions, great educators, and equitable opportunities by practicing data-informed stewardship of resources and policy development, all done in partnership with educators, families, and stakeholders.[2] | ” |
Superintendent
The current Illinois Superintendent of Education is Tony Sanders (nonpartisan). Sanders assumed office in 2023.
State Board of Education
The State Board of Education is composed of nine members with the Superintendent of Education serving as the tenth member. The members of the board are appointed by the Governor with the consent of the State Senate for four-year terms. The board sets educational policies and guidelines for public and private schools, preschool through grade 12, as well as vocational education. It also analyzes the aims, needs and requirements of education and recommends legislation to the General Assembly and Governor.[1]
