The Illinois Director of Labor is an appointed state executive position in the Illinois state government. The director serves at the governor's pleasure, and oversees the Illinois Department of Labor, which aims to promote and protect the rights, wages, welfare, working conditions, safety and health of Illinois workers through enforcement of the state labor laws.[1]

The current Illinois Director of Labor is Jane Flanagan (nonpartisan). Flanagan assumed office in 2023.
Authority
The position of the Illinois Director of Labor was created in Article V of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois.
Article V, Section 5-20:
Each department shall have an officer as its head who shall be known as director or secretary and who shall, subject to the provisions of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois, execute the powers and discharge the duties vested by law in his or her respective department. The following officers are hereby created: [...] Director of Labor, for the Department of Labor.[2] |

Vacancies
Article V, Section 9 of the Illinois Constitution also covers the process for filling vacancies in the office of Illinois Director of Labor. Because the director of labor serves at the pleasure of the governor, the process for appointment is the same whether the governor appoints a new director or the current director stops serving in the office. The governor appoints the director with the advice and consent of the state Senate. If the Senate fails to act upon a nomination for appointment with in 60 days of it being made, the appointment will be considered to have received the advice and consent of the Senate. Vacancies occurring during Senate recesses are filled by temporary gubernatorial appointments. The governor must submit a nomination when the Senate reconvenes for advice and consent.[4]
Duties
The mission of the Illinois Department of Labor is to promote and protect the rights, wages, welfare, working conditions, safety and health of Illinois workers through enforcement of the state labor laws, to safeguard the public through regulation of amusement rides, and to ensure compliance with all other labor standards.[1]
The department is responsible for the administration and enforcement of more than 20 labor and safety laws.[1]
