The Illinois Director of Natural Resources is a state executive position in the Illinois state government. Its mission is to manage, conserve and protect Illinois' natural, recreational and cultural resources while furthering the public's understanding and appreciation of those resources. The department also promotes the education, science and public safety of Illinois' natural resources.[1] The director is a nonpartisan appointee of the governor and serves at his or her pleasure.

Authority
The position of the Illinois Director of Natural Resources was created in Article V of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois.[2]
Article V, Section 5-20:
Each department shall have an officer as its head who shall be known as director or secretary and who shall, subject to the provisions of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois, execute the powers and discharge the duties vested by law in his or her respective department. The following officers are hereby created: [...] Director of Natural Resources, for the Department of Natural Resources. |

The director is appointed by the governor and serves at the governor's pleasure.
Vacancies
Article V, Section 9 of the Illinois Constitution also covers the process for filling vacancies in the office of Illinois Director of Natural Resources. Because the director serves at the pleasure of the governor, the process for appointment is the same whether the governor appoints a new director or the current director stops serving in the office. The governor appoints the director with the advice and consent of the state Senate. If the Senate fails to act upon a nomination for appointment with in 60 days of it being made, the appointment will be considered to have received the advice and consent of the Senate. Vacancies occurring during Senate recesses are filled by temporary gubernatorial appointments. The governor must submit a nomination when the Senate reconvenes for advice and consent.[3]
Duties
The director's office administers several key interdisciplinary functions within the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.[4]
The mission of the department is to manage, protect and sustain Illinois' natural and cultural resources, provide resource-compatible recreational opportunities, and promote public safety education related to natural resources and science.[4]
