The Illinois Gateway Amendment was on the ballot in Illinois on November 3, 1896, as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment. It was defeated. It proposed to allow the general assembly to propose amendments to three articles of the constitution in each session instead of just one.[1]

Note: Although this measure gathered more "yes" votes, it did not pass because at the time of the vote Illinois required that amendments receive a vote of more than 50 percent of those voting in the election. There were 1,090,869 voters in this election, requiring at least 545,435 “yes” votes.
