Of the seven state executive offices on the ballot in 2021, four of them were represented by incumbents who were subject to term limits. One of those incumbents was ineligible to run for re-election in 2021 due to term limits. This represented 14.2 percent of the total seats up for election in 2021.

The map below displays the 36 states that had laws limiting the number of terms state executive officials could serve as of 2021. Of those states, only three—Louisiana, New Jersey, and Virginia—held elections in 2021.

One state executive seat in Louisiana was up for election in 2021. No official was ineligible to run because of term limits.
New Jersey
Two state executive seats in New Jersey were up for election in 2021. No officials were ineligible to run because of term limits.
Virginia
Three state executive seats in Virginia were up for election in 2021. One official was ineligible to run because of term limits.
