April 14, 2010

Washington, D.C.: The United States Senate will begin the impeachment trial of Thomas Porteous on April 14, 2010.[1] Porteous, a federal judge from the Eastern District of Louisiana, goes on trial before the Senate after being impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives on March 11, 2010 on four unanimously approved articles of impeachment.[2]

The trial will be governed by a panel of 12 Senators who oversee the proceedings along with five House members who will act as the trial managers.[3] The panel will govern the proceedings similar to a normal trial in a court of law. Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill will chair the panel. The trial is expected to last four months. A two-thirds vote in the Senate is required in order to convict Porteous. If Porteous is convicted, he will be removed from his position as a federal judge.[1]

This is the first impeachment trial for a federal judge in over two decades. On November 3, 1989 federal judge Walter Nixon was impeached by the U.S. Senate.[4]
