There were 220 state legislative seats up for election on November 5, 2013, in two states. This page analyzes incumbents defeated in those elections. An incumbent may be defeated at two points in an election cycle: during a primary and during a general election.[1]

In 2013, seven incumbents lost their re-election bids: five in general elections and two in primaries. This was down from 2011 when 30 incumbents were defeated in the four states that held elections that year.

In state legislative general elections, five incumbents lost to challengers, 2.5% of incumbents running for re-election. This was down from 2011 when 4.4% of incumbents were defeated across the four states that held elections that year.

In 2013 general elections:

  • One Democratic incumbent lost, 1.0% of the 97 Democratic incumbents who ran and 1.3% of the 80 contested Democratic incumbents.
  • Four Republican incumbents lost, 3.8% of the 104 Republican incumbents who ran and 5.3% of the 76 contested Republican incumbents.

    Incumbents defeated in primaries

    In state legislative primaries, two incumbents lost to challengers, 1.0% of incumbents running for re-election. This was down from 2011 when nine incumbents were defeated across the four states that held elections that year.

  • Two Republican incumbents lost, 1.9% of the 107 Republican incumbents who ran and 20% of the 10 contested Republican incumbents.
