There were 5,916 state legislative seats up for election on November 8, 2016, in 44 states. This page analyzes incumbents defeated in those elections. An incumbent may be defeated at two points in an election cycle: during a primary and during a general election.[1]

In 2016, 362 incumbents lost their re-election bids: 237 in general elections and 125 in primaries.[2] This was the smallest number of incumbents defeated in even-year state legislative elections since Ballotpedia began gathering data in 2010.

Incumbents defeated in general elections

In state legislative general elections, 237 incumbents lost to challengers, 5.0% of incumbents running for re-election. This was the smallest percentage of incumbents defeated in even-year state legislative elections since Ballotpedia began gathering data in 2010.

In 2016 general elections:

  • 131 Democratic incumbents lost, 6.2% of the 2,120 Democratic incumbents who ran and 10.8% of the 1,209 contested Democratic incumbents.
  • 103 Republican incumbents lost, 3.9% of the 2,629 Republican incumbents who ran and 5.9% of the 1,735 contested Republican incumbents.
  • Three minor party or independent incumbents lost, 25.0% of the 12 minor party or independent incumbents who ran and 33.3% of the nine contested minor party or independent incumbents.
  • The total number of incumbents defeated in general elections—237—was a 6% decrease from 2014 (251).

    Incumbents defeated in primaries

    In state legislative primaries, 125 incumbents lost to challengers, 2.6% of incumbents running for re-election. This was less than in 2014 (131) and 2012 (197) but more than in 2010 (116).

    In 2016 primaries:

  • 40 Democratic incumbents lost, 1.8% of the 2,168 Democratic incumbents who ran and 10% of the 402 contested Democratic incumbents.
  • 85 Republican incumbents lost, 3.1% of the 2,707 Republican incumbents who ran and 14.6% of the 582 contested Republican incumbents.
  • The total number of incumbents defeated in primaries—125—was a 5% decrease from 2014 (131).

    There were 50 seats up for election in Alaska. Overall, 36 incumbents advanced to the general election, including 16 Democrats, 19 Republicans, and one independent. Of that total, two Republican incumbents lost, representing 5.6% of incumbents who advanced to the general election.
