There were 5,875 state legislative seats up for election on November 3, 2020, in 44 states. This page analyzes incumbents defeated in those elections. An incumbent may be defeated at two points in an election cycle: during a primary and during a general election.[1]

In 2020, 382 incumbents lost their re-election bids: 225 in general elections and 157 in primaries.[2] This was less than 2018 (484) but more than 2016 (362).

Incumbents defeated in general elections

In state legislative general elections, 225 incumbents lost to challengers, 4.7% of incumbents running for re-election. This was the smallest number of incumbents defeated in even-year state legislative general elections since Ballotpedia began gathering data in 2010.

In 2020 general elections:

  • 165 Democratic incumbents lost, 7.0% of the 2,345 Democratic incumbents who ran and 10.5% of the 1,568 contested Democratic incumbents.
  • 51 Republican incumbents lost, 2.1% of the 2,465 Republican incumbents who ran and 3.0% of the 1,721 contested Republican incumbents.
  • Nine minor party or independent incumbents lost, 40.9% of the 22 minor party or independent incumbents who ran and 47.4% of the 19 contested minor party or independent incumbents.
  • The total number of incumbents defeated in general elections—225—was a 29% decrease from 2018 (318).

    Incumbents defeated in primaries

    In state legislative primaries, 157 incumbents lost to challengers, 3.1% of incumbents running for re-election. This was a decrease from 2018 (166) but an increase from 2016 (125).

    In 2020 primaries:

  • 63 Democratic incumbents lost, 2.6% of the 2,415 Democratic incumbents who ran and 12.8% of the 494 contested Democratic incumbents.
  • 94 Republican incumbents lost, 3.7% of the 2,562 Republican incumbents who ran and 18.4% of the 511 contested Republican incumbents.
  • The total number of incumbents defeated in primaries—157—was a 5% decrease from 2018 (166).

    There were 50 seats up for election in Alaska. Overall, 39 incumbents advanced to the general election, including 17 Democrats, 20 Republicans, and two independents. Of that total, two Republican incumbents lost, representing 5.1% of incumbents who advanced to the general election.
