Independence Sales Tax Measure, 2009
An Independence Sales Tax Measure was on the August 4, 2009 ballot in Jackson County for voters in the City of Independence. The measure called for a new sales tax that would have increased the number of police officers patrolling the city.[1]
The measure was defeated.[2]
The proposed 3/8 cent sales tax was expected to generate approximately $6 million per year. Funds would have been directed towards hiring 42 new police officers, 18 department employees and funding a new police station.[1] The new police station project was developed in light of recent statistics that revealed that crime had increased 30 percent in the city.[2]
