Race background
Indiana's 8th District was included in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's "Red to Blue List," which identifies districts that the organization has specifically targeted to flip from Republican to Democratic control.[8]
Indiana's 8th was considered to be Leaning Republican according to the New York Times race ratings. Incumbent Larry Bucshon was challenged by former state legislator Dave Crooks.[9]
Endorsements
Incumbent Larry Bucshon was endorsed by the National Rifle Association in the 8th District race in 2012.[10] On April 24, 2012, Bucshon was endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.[11]
Democratic candidate Dave Crooks received endorsement from the Blue Dog Coalition on April 26, 2012.[12]
Impact of redistricting

The newly-drawn map was designed to produce seven districts that were favorable to the Republican Party and two that were favorable to the Democratic Party.
In redistricting, the 8th District lost Republican-leaning areas of Fountain County, Putnam County, and Warren County. The district acquired Dubois County, Perry County, Spencer County, and part of Crawford County, all of which favored neither party.[13]
In redistricting, The Hill published a list of the Top Ten House Members who were helped by redistricting.[14] Todd C. Young, representative from Indiana's 9th Congressional District ranked 10th on the list.[14]
WIBC analysts said the race leaned toward Larry Bucshon.[15]
The new 8th District was composed of the following percentages of voters of the old congressional districts.[16][17]
- 88 percent from the 8th Congressional District
- 12 percent from the 9th Congressional District

In 2012, FairVote did a study on partisanship in the congressional districts, giving each a percentage ranking (D/R) based on the new 2012 maps and comparing that to the old 2010 maps. Indiana's 8th District became more Democratic because of redistricting.[18]
- 2012: 45D / 55R
- 2010: 44D / 56R
Cook Political Report's PVI
In 2012, Cook Political Report released its updated figures on the Partisan Voter Index, which measures each congressional district's partisanship relative to the rest of the country. Indiana's 8th Congressional District had a PVI of R+8, which was the 141st most Republican district in the country. In 2008, this district was won by John McCain (R), 51-49 percent over Barack Obama (D). In 2004, George W. Bush (R) won the district 62-38 percent over John Kerry (D).[19]
