Indianapolis Public Schools elections

General election date
November 6, 2018
Enrollment ('15-'16)
31,371 students

Three seats on the Indianapolis Public Schools school board in Indiana were up for election on November 6, 2018. Newcomer Evan Hawkins won the open District 3 seat. In District 5, Taria Slack defeated incumbent Dorene Hoops. At-large incumbent Mary Ann Sullivan lost to Susan Collins.

During the terms of the sitting board members in 2018, the board voted to hand more control to school principals, partner with charter school operators, close several high schools, and ask residents for additional funding. The IPS Community Coalition, which formed in 2017 and was critical of the district's administration, backed three candidates in the race: Susan Collins, Michele Lorbieski, and Taria Slack. Chalkbeat reported that the group was aligned with the teacher's union, and the state's teacher's union contributed $68,400 to the three candidates.[1]

The political group Stand for Children supported three other candidates in the race: incumbents Mary Ann Sullivan and Dorene Hoops, as well as newcomer Evan Hawkins. These candidates voiced support for partnerships with charters in the district.

Joanna Elizabeth Krumel and Sherry Lynne Shelton also ran.

The school board election shared the ballot with a referendum asking voters to approve $272 million in additional funding for the district.[2]
