The Iowa Department of Education oversees K-12 public education, nonpublic schools that receive state accreditation, area education agencies (AEAs), community colleges, and teacher preparation programs in the state of Iowa. Click here for more information about the Iowa Director of Education.

Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Iowa Department of Education reads:[1]

Ensure all students experience a world-class education.[2]

Superintendent

The current Iowa Director of Education is McKenzie Snow (nonpartisan). Snow assumed office in 2023.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of nine members. Seven are voting members that serve six-year terms. The nonvoting members are a student member who serves a one-year term, and the director of the department of workforce development.[3] The responsibilities of the board include:[4]

  • Adopting rules for carrying out the responsibilities of the Iowa Department of Education
  • Establishing standards and procedures as well as reviewing and approving educator preparation programs
  • Hearing parent and guardian appeals of decisions by local school boards
  • Adopting content standards applicable to all kindergarten through 12th grade students in accredited Iowa schools
  • Accrediting school districts and community colleges
  • Reviewing and approving the budgets of area education agencies and community colleges
  • Approving or denying charter school applications
  • Responding to concerns and input from Iowa citizens throughout the year
  • Analyzing the data outlined in the Annual Condition of Education Report[2]
