After graduating highschool and subsequently becoming homeless in 2015, Irene moved to Anchorage in search of opportunity. Even then, she began trying to make a difference, advocating to change policies around housing and homelessness that wouldn't just help her, but everyone in Anchorage. After 6 months, Irene pulled herself out of homelessness. In 2016 she started her family and had her Daughter. The next year, still feeling the pull to make a difference for her community, Irene started her 2018 run for school board at just 20 years old. After losing by an inch, she vowed to come back, and went to school.
Now, after Graduating Cum Laude from UAA with a Bachelors in Psychology and Minoring in Social Welfare, Irene is again ready to make a difference.- Too many of our students graduate without the tools they need to thrive in the real world. They must be empowered with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to tackle the challenges of young adulthood head-on. From securing a job to building healthy relationships, we owe it to our students to prioritize their preparation for life after school.
- I support teachers having the autonomy to teach because it permits them to design and implement effective and engaging strategies catering to students' needs. Data shows that teachers who have autonomy are likely to be innovative, creative, and more responsive to the diverse needs of their students. This can translate to better student outcomes which better prepares students for life after school. Studies have also shown that classroom autonomy is a major factor in determining the level of job satisfaction, which is an important contributing factor in teacher retention.
- ASD is richly diverse. We must prioritize culturally responsive teaching, recruit and retain diverse teachers, and root out systemic inequities in our school system. Every student should have an equal opportunity to thrive regardless of needs, race, ethnicity, gender, or background.
2. We wouldn't have an education system without our dedicated educators, and I believe they must be fairly compensated. I support efforts to return to a defined-benefit retirement plan because our teachers shouldn't have to worry about their future after dedicating their lives to shaping the next generation.
It is also the School Boards responsibility to hire and dismiss the superintendent.
It is also the School Boards responsibility to regularly attend community councils to update the public on district matters and work with other government groups.

As an ASD parent and special education paraprofessional educator I love seeing Irene running for the school board! I look forward to seeing how her perspective can challenge stagnant problems that need fresh perspective! I’m also very excited to see such a strong focus on showing appropriate respect for all staff that work directly with students.
