Noteworthy events
Overstreet shoots and kills burglar
Overstreet shot and killed a home intruder in 2010. John Egland Howard Jr. and a second intruder threw a rock through the glass door of Overstreet's house and entered the main floor. The police reported that it was unlikely that Howard knew Overstreet was home. After discovering the intruder, Overstreet fired at Howard. Howard, hit in the chest, was sent to the hospital and later pronounced dead. The police report found no weapon on Howard. A state law passed in 2005 granted homeowners the right to use deadly force against intruders.[5]
