J. Loren Russell
J. Loren Russell was a 2016 candidate for District 17 of the New York City Council in New York. He was defeated in the special election on February 23, 2016.
Biography
Russell was born in Harlem and raised in the Bronx. He is an associate minister at Goodwill Baptist Church and Greater Universal Baptist Church. His professional experience also includes starting a financial planning services company, JLR Financial Services Co., in 1989.[1][2]
Campaign themes

Russell said he would focus on economic development, education and foster care if elected.[3] He also said he wanted to improve the relationship between the community and law enforcement. "Police have to be shown how to work with the community, and the community needs to understand how to work with the police," he said.[2]

The city of New York, New York, held a special election for District 17 of the city council on February 23, 2016. Maria del Carmen Arroyo, who previously held the position, resigned from the council on December 31, 2015. The winner of the 2016 special election served a term that expired on December 31, 2016.
