My name is JT Wu, and I’m running to be the State Representative for Georgia’s 97th District.

I grew up here in District 97 as the son of Asian American immigrants who chose to make Gwinnett County their home. They sacrificed daily because they believed that a good education was the foundation for a brighter future for their family.

Thanks to them, I was able to go from kindergarten at GCPS to graduating on scholarship from Princeton University. Since then, I’ve held executive roles across the private and non-profit sectors fighting for education and healthcare. In many ways, I feel like I'm living proof of my parents’ American Dream.

That’s why I’ve dedicated my career to giving back to my hometown community that made me who I am today. I founded a nationally-recognized early childhood literacy nonprofit in Gwinnett, raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour for employees in our Library system, and worked to expand healthcare access for folks suffering from substance use disorders.

Growing up here, I’ve seen what our diverse community needs from its government and I’ve got a proven record of producing results. That’s why I’m running – to deliver results for our District and defend the American Dream.
  • Community - I’m an experienced policy expert and homegrown leader with a proven track record of delivering results for this community. I founded an award-winning early childhood literacy nonprofit that has been embraced by the Georgia Department of Education and Gwinnett County Public Schools. As a Public Library Trustee, I’ve helped open two new branches in our District and successfully raised the minimum wage for all of our library staff to $15 an hour. I’ve also worked to expand treatment options for folks suffering from substance use disorders - because addiction should be treated as the disease that it is, not as a moral failing. If elected, I’ll bring the same dedication and innovation for our community to the Capitol.
  • Opportunity - I’ll continue to fight for better educational supports, better healthcare access, and better economic opportunities for every Georgian. As a son of immigrants myself, I know how important foundational opportunity is to the American Dream. We should continue to leverage Gwinnett’s innate multiculturalism to ensure that our District is competitively positioned for an interconnected global future. Our kids deserve strong investments in early education and lifelong learning that meet families where they are - and in their own languages. And it’s vitally important that we craft innovative policies that come alongside our hardworking families and small businesses to expand healthcare access and fuel greater economic opportunities.
  • Progress - I’m running to be a common-sense voice for Georgians who want our state to keep moving forward. I believe it’s time for a new generation of leadership who will continue the fight against chilling policies that penalize our hardworking teachers and families. On nearly every issue - from climate-friendly investments to safeguarding constitutional rights for under-represented populations - the ideas being implemented today are going to be the legacies left behind for future generations. As a leader who has both lived the American Dream & seen exactly how bad bills have impacted our diverse community, I’ll pair a proven track record of experience with a fresh & energetic perspective to ensure our government truly works for all of us.
I care deeply about strengthening educational opportunities & expanding quality healthcare, as well as addressing our community’s economic needs & standing up to racism and hatred.

Over half of our kids won’t read proficiently by the 3rd grade because our public schools are chronically underfunded. Finding common ground with parents, teachers, & students to enhance early literacy supports and ensure effective educational investments will be a day-one priority of mine under the Gold Dome.

Over 600,000 Georgians remain uninsured, yet our leaders have failed to take common-sense steps to expand Medicaid & make quality healthcare available for all. And there are still far too many barriers for folks suffering from substance use disorders who should have access to effective life-saving treatments on their roads to recovery.

During this pandemic, our small business owners deserve leaders that understand how to incentivize the private sector. We should be taking concrete steps to prioritize entrepreneurship, urban-rural partnerships, and high-quality jobs for hardworking Georgians - especially those impacting under-represented communities.

And we need to fight against voter suppression, defend reproductive rights, and stand in solidarity against hatred with every community in our diverse state - including our AAPI, Hispanic, & our African American neighbors, plus all of our state’s DREAMers: because our brightest days are ahead of us when we forge the future together.
