Primary elections were scheduled for September 12, 2017, and the general election was on November 7, 2017. Under New York law, candidates who run unopposed in a primary or general election win the nomination or election automatically, and their names do not appear on the ballot.[2] Incumbent Laurie Cumbo (D) defeated Jabari Brisport (Green) and Christine Parker (R) in the general election for the District 35 seat on the New York City Council.

Jabari is a candidate fighting for working-class New Yorkers. He will fight to create a New York that works for all of us - not just the wealthy elite.

Jabari was born and raised in Brooklyn. He has seen things get more and more difficult for him and his neighbors. He knows the political establishment has failed. As a public school teacher, Jabari is part of a movement of working-class New Yorkers fighting for a more just and equitable state. That is why he is backed by the Working Families Party, New York Communities for Change, Democratic Socialists of America, and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. They know he is ready to fight and are ready to fight with him .

2017

Brisport's campaign website included the following themes for 2017:

Housing
In our district, Jabari rejects the conversion of the Bedford Union Armory to luxury housing. We need 100% Affordable Housing at the site. And put it in a Community Land Trust.

Jabari also calls for an two new revenue streams for affordable and public housing: an anti-speculation tax and a vacancy tax.

Police Reform
Jabari supports the Right to Know Act, ending Broken Windows Policing, and the Shut Down Rikers Movement. He also supports greater community control of the police.

Economic Justice
Jabari supports higher taxes on the 1%, with a tax targeting corporations where the CEO makes hundreds of times what their median worker makes. In addition to calling for higher taxes on the wealthy, Jabari will also slash his own salary by $100k and only take the median income of Brooklyn. Jabari also supports worker-coops and increased participatory budgeting.

Climate Justice
Jabari supports the Green New Deal, advocated by the Green Party, which would usher a nationwide transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030. He also supports divesting NYC from fossil fuels and aggressively funding food rescue programs.

Education
Jabari neither supports charter schools nor high stakes testing. He supports the implementation of more speed safety cameras in school zones.[4][5]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in New York

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
