Jabba the Hutt was an influential Tatooine gangster involved in "illegal spice trading, smuggling, slave trading, assassination, and piracy."[1][2]
Career and background
Jabba the Hutt was a "large, slug-like creature," who, like many in his family, was a gangster. The Hutts controlled the desert-like planet of Tatooine and had ties to organized crime across the galaxy. According to bounty hunter Boba Fett, the clone son of bounty hunter Jango Fett, Jabba illegally traded spice and slaves, smuggled goods, ordered assassinations and engaged in piracy.[1][3][2]
The memoirs of Boba Fett mention that Jabba "was known as a cruel, depraved, sadistic ruler" with a "penchant for violent entertainment, torture," and that he possessed "vicious temper, gruesome appetite, and endless greed." According to Fett's memoirs, Jabba keep "scantily clad slave girls chained to his throne for amusement" but "when fickle, he would send these slaves to a ghastly end."[2]
The though the Hutts "remained neutral during the Clone Wars," the Sith Lord Count Dooku attempted to persuade the Hutts to join his side, going as far as framing the Jedi for kidnapping Jabba's son. In the aftermath of the failed kidnapping plot, "the Republic had won Jabba's favor."[2][1]
Han Solo
When Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcoln and smuggler working for Jabba, had to dump a shipment of spice to an Imperial patrol ship, Jabba placed a bounty on his head. That bounty motivated Han Solo to agree to transport Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker to Alderaan. Along the way, they find themselves on the Death Star and hatch a plan to rescue Princess Leia. If Han had not made that trip with Obi Wan and Luke, the Galactic Civil War might have ended quite differently.[1][2]
Han, however, never had a chance to pay off his debt to Jabba, who enlisted bounty hunter Boba Fett to capture him. Frozen in carbonite and delivered to Jabba by Fett, Jabba called Han his "favorite decoration" and hung the frozen smuggler on the wall of his palace. After Han's friends botch a rescue mission, Luke Skywalker eventually arrives to free them all.[4][1] In the chaos of a final rescue plan, Leia Organa strangles Jabba with the chains he had used to bind her to his throne.[1]
