Jack R. Smith is a former interim Superintendent of Maryland Schools. He began serving on September 11, 2015, upon the resignation of former superintendent Lillian Lowery, and remained in the position until a permanent officeholder assumed office on July 1, 2016.[1]

Smith has worked in a number of educational positions in Washington, Maryland, and Japan. He began his educational career as a teacher in the state of Washington. In 1985, he became a school administrator, serving as an assistant principal in Richland, Washington. By 1988, he became principal. In 1992, he then moved to Japan, where he served as a middle and high school principal in Tokyo. In 1998, he returned to the United States to work as a principal in Calvert County, Maryland. From 2006-2013, he served as the superintendent of Calvert County public schools.[2]

Immediately before being appointed interim superintendent of Maryland schools, he served in the Maryland State Department of Education as the deputy superintendent for teaching and learning as well as the chief academic officer of the Department.[1]

Awards

Public School Superintendent of the Year

In 2013, Dr. Smith was recognized as the "Public School Superintendent of the Year" by the Public School Superintendents' Association of Maryland for his work in the Calvert County public school district.[2]

Political career

Maryland Superintendent of Schools (2015-2016)

Smith was appointed by the Maryland State Board of Education to serve as the interim superintendent of schools, effective September 11, 2015. He replaced outgoing Superintendent Lowery, who resigned early in order to take a position in the Ohio private sector. Smith remained in the post until permanent replacement Karen Salmon assumed office on July 1, 2016.[1][3]
