Candidate Connection

Jackie Collett participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 13, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Jackie Collett's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Education

2) Healthcare
3) Economic Opportunities[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Access to quality education from early-childhood to post highschool. I worked in nonprofits for over 13 years, helping low-income families through afterschool and summer programs. I am also passionate about access to affordable healthcare, including reproductive health. As a recipient of Planned Parenthood services, I will continue to fight for Title X funding.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Jackie Collett answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My parents have overcome great obstacles and exemplify what it means to be compassionate.[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I'm a fighter. I focus on facts and evidence-based programs and policies. I am honest.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
State senators must represent and listen to their constituents, be honest and transparent, and fully feel the enormity of the commitment that is necessary to be effective.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I want to leave a legacy that encapsulates hard work, fighting for equality, and demonstrating compassion to all people.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The Challenger explosion in 1986 - I was 6. That makes me 38 years old now.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
When I was a child, I worked on my grandparents' dairy farm in Wisconsin over summer break. When I was 14, I started working part-time at the Omaha Public Library.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
On my first date with my husband, I had to leave early to put my sick cat down.[3]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Previous experience is probably helpful in understanding process and procedures. However, if a person wants to shake things up, a lack of experience is helpful.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
Creating an economic structure that levels the playing field for all Nebraskans, ensuring affordable healthcare, and creating an education system that provides equal access for all students.[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Legislators should be able to communicate openly and be heard without worry that the governor will target and attack them.[3]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Having good working relationships is necessary. For me, this means being able to fight it out, make progress, and move on with respect.[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
I have not thought that far ahead. I'm focused on this race.[3]
