Ballotpedia survey responses

Jackie Patton participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 10, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Jackie Patton's responses follow below.[2]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | 1) Health Care Reform |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | I have worked as a nurse for over 20 years, caring for people, from all walks of life, at their most vulnerable. I believe healthcare is a basic right, not a privilege. That no American should worry about medical bills, or loosing everything they have worked for, if they or a family member gets ill. When compared to other nations, healthcare cost are higher in America, but health outcomes are worse. In the richest country on the planet, no one should have to go without healthcare. I support the Affordable Care Act, believe we should expand on it, with the goal of establishing a universal healthcare system.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Jackie Patton answered the following:
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
“ | I always have looked up to my grandmother, Mary DeAngelis, and learned a lot of important life lessons from her. She came to America from Italy as a young child, and life wasn‚Äôt always easy for her. She had to drop out of school at a very young age to care for her ill mother, but despite having a sixth-grade education, she was very well read and intellectual. She also suffered from heart problems from having rheumatic fever as a child. I remember countless times, sitting outside at my grandparents‚Äô home with family and neighbors, at a picnic table covered with a white table cloth billowing in the wind and weighted down with a vase of wild flowers, listening to lively conversations about social and political issues. There was good food, wine and a lot of yelling and disagreement going on. My well-informed grandmother always stood out to me as being the person who, during these debates, whose point of view prevailed. She could tell a story, back it up with knowledge and convince others, or not. But despite the differences, at the end of the day there was respect between everyone. This is where I learned that, while everyone might not agree, discussing issues is an important part of civic involvement. My grandmother had a great deal of empathy for others and was very kind and charitable. Her personal experience with hardship enabled her to understand people. She would not tolerate speaking bad about another person or gossip. She expected hard work, and could be strict, but always kind and patient. I admire her integrity and try to exemplify it in my own life and for my children.[4] | ” |
“ | Amazing Grace: The Lives Of Children And The Conscience Of A Nation, By Jonathan Kozol. I read this book after I started working in a large urban district with children, many of which live in poverty, in 2000. Kozol describes how poverty affects children's education, environment and health. I believe in equity, and that all Americans, despite where they live, should have equal opportunity. I support health equity in all policy.[4] | ” |
“ | It is important to me that an elected official is dedicated to representing the people who elected them. That they are honest and have integrity. That they work hard and base decisions on what is best for the American people not special interest groups or a few.[4] | ” |
“ | I am honest and work hard, am committed to serving others and posses integrity. I believe it is important to listen to and represent constituents.[4] | ” |
“ | Represent district and state priorities , legislation, and constituent services.[4] | ” |
“ | I remember my mother crying while watching the news about the Kent State Shootings. I was almost 5 years old[4] | ” |
“ | As a teenager, I worked at a restaurant, York Steak House. I don't remember exactly how long I worked there, but at least a year.[4] | ” |
“ | Halloween. No pressure.[4] | ” |
“ | Rolling Stones-You Can't Always Get What You Want.[4] | ” |
“ | It's members, who come from all over the country and represent people from all walks of life.[4] | ” |
“ | Addressing climate change[4] | ” |
“ | Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs[4] | ” |
“ | No. I think it is to short of a term. As soon as a person is elected they have to start running for their next term.[4] | ” |
“ | I support term limits.[4] | ” |
“ | Elizabeth Warren and Claire McCaskill. I like their straight forward approach and feel they both strongly advocate for working and middle class Americans.[4] | ” |
“ | I met a man who lost two children to opioid drug overdoses. His remaining son is in recovery. He shared his heartbreak, hope and fear for his remaining child. He helped me to understand that high quality comprehensive treatment needs to be made more readily available. That as things stand now, drug dealers are doing a better job at reaching people who are addicted.[4] | ” |
