Five seats on the Jackson-Madison County School System Board of Education were up for general election on August 7, 2014. Incumbents in Districts 1, 4, 5 and 6 were up for re-election.

All the incumbents on the ballot, George F. Neely, David Clifft, Bob Alvey, Joe H. Mays and Dave Bratcher, were re-elected.[1]

The District 1 and District 5, Position 2 incumbents, George F. Neely and Dave Bratcher, ran against one challenger each. The other three incumbents, David Clifft, Bob Alvey and Joe H. Mays, ran unopposed for re-election.[2]

Jackson-Madison County School System is located in Madison County, Tennessee. The county seat of Madison County is Jackson. Madison County was home to 98,733 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, Jackson-Madison County School System was the 11th-largest school district in Tennessee and served 13,511 students.[4]

Demographics

Madison County outperformed in comparison to the rest of Tennessee in terms of education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 23.8 percent of Madison County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.5 percent for Tennessee as a whole. The median household income for Madison County was $42,348 compared to $44,140 for the state of Tennessee. The percentage of people below poverty level for Madison County was 18.3 percent while it was 17.3 percent for the state of Tennessee.[3]

Voter and candidate information

The Jackson-Madison County Board of Education consists of nine members elected to four-year terms by specific geographic district. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on August 7, 2014. Five seats were up for election in 2014.[6]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was April 3, 2014, and the deadline to withdraw was April 10, 2014.[7] There were no qualifications to be a write-in candidate.[8]
