Jackson Kiser was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia. He joined the court in 1981 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan (R). Kiser served on senior status from April 30, 1997, until his death on October 21, 2020.

Early life and education

Born in Welch, West Virginia, Kiser graduated from Concord College with his bachelor's degree in 1951 and later from the Washington and Lee University School of Law with his bachelor's of Laws degree in 1952.[1]

Professional career

Kiser served as a judge advocate in the United States Army Judge Advocate General Corps from 1952 to 1955. He served as a Captain in the United States Army Reserve from 1955 to 1961. Kiser was U.S. District Court commissioner for the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia from 1956 to 1958. He was an assistant United States attorney for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Virginia from 1958 to 1961. Kiser was a private practice attorney in Virginia from 1961 to 1982.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Western District of Virginia

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator John W. Warner, Kiser was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia by Ronald Reagan (R) on November 4, 1981, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629, which was approved by Congress. Kiser was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 3, 1981 and received commission on December 3, 1981. Kiser served as the chief judge of the court from 1993 to 1997 before later assuming senior status on April 30, 1997. His service ended on October 21, 2020, when he died.[1] Kiser was succeeded in this position by Norman Moon.
