I moved to Seattle from the Midwest in 1986 with my wife, Maxine, when she began her medical residency at Swedish Family Practice. From the day we arrived, I knew that I wanted to make this place my home. As I embarked on my legal career, I imagined that if I were ever given the opportunity to serve as a judge, it would be the culmination of my public and professional life. My mother and her father—my Dutch grandfather—instilled in me the idea that public service is the rent you owe for the space you are granted on earth. I took that to heart. Shortly after I started my practice, I became involved in a case that had a major impact on my life and on the city of Seattle. Working pro bono, I successfully represented the Citizen’s Alliance to Keep the Pike Place Market Public in a lawsuit to prevent private investors from taking over the Market and turning it to for-profit business. From 1994-99, I served as Chair of the Mt. Baker Community Club in my neighborhood, as well as co-chair of the Pike Place Market Foundation, a charitable foundation that raises money for social service agencies attending to the needs of low-income residents in downtown Seattle, where I have also been a board member ever since. I have also served as a board member or chair of the Pike Place Market PDA Council every year from 2003-2015. Those endeavors have been incredibly fulfilling and satisfying to me. But now, after a long and successful commercial litigation practice, I want to put my professional experience, skills and knowledge to work in an area where they can do the most good. I have always been dedicated to the idea that everyone from every walk and station in life deserves equal justice under the law. And I firmly believe that at this stage of my career, I am capable and qualified to further that goal by serving as Superior Court Judge. [2] |
