Jacob Hafter was a 2014 judicial candidate for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Nevada. He was a Republican candidate who ran for Nevada Attorney General in the 2010 election.[1]

Education

Hafter received a B.S. in emergency medical services management from George Washington University. He received his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio. He also earned a master's degree in health science from Cleveland State University.[2]

Career

Hafter was an attorney in private practice.[2] He served as the in-house counsel as well as the corporate director of administration for Monarch Casino & Resort, Inc. His responsibilities included overseeing all development activities, in addition to corporate governance, SEC matters, and other administrative concerns.

Hafter, representing his client Tracy Hurst, successfully challenged the Nevada Board of Medical Examiners who were found on September 18, 2009 to have acted in violation of the state's Open Meeting Law. Board members had met to consider passing regulations that would have permitted medical assistants to give flu shots and other vaccines while at the same time prohibiting them from administering injections of cosmetic drugs such as Botox. A number of doctors in attendance had other engagements that same day. Rather then risk losing their quorum, the board simply voted unanimously to pass the regulations wholesale. Several medical spa treatment centers who used medical assistants to conduct certain cosmetic work argued this cost them business and they were never given a chance to have their say heard.[3]

He was admitted to practice law in Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Party affiliation

Hafter admitted that he had only just joined the Republican Party on December 14, 2009, the day he registered in Clark County to launch his campaign for Nevada Attorney General. Prior to this, he had registered as a Democrat in 2005 when he resided in Washoe County.

Travis Barrick, his opponent in the June 8th state Republican primary, did not make the matter an issue in the campaign, though he has noted that he himself has been a registered Republican since 1955. He welcomed Hafter warmly into the Republican Party, stating, "I hope he sticks around. He has said he has evolved to being a Republican. I hope if he is elected that he won't evolve back to be a Democrat."[6]
