About the office

The Arizona State Board of Education is composed of 11 members, including the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The other 10 members of the board are appointed by the Governor with the consent of the State Senate for four-year terms. The Arizona Constitution requires that the State Board of Education includes the "president of a state university or state college, four lay members, a president or chancellor of a community college district, a person who is an owner or administrator of a charter school, a superintendent of a high school district, a classroom teacher and a county school superintendent" in addition to the state superintendent. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system. In Arizona, the State Board of Education is also the State Board for Vocational and Technological Education.[2]
