An effort to recall Jaime Churches, a member of the Democratic Party, from her elected position representing District 27 in the Michigan House of Representatives was launched on July 12, 2023. The Michigan Board of State Canvassers met on August 1, 2023, to hold a clarity and factual hearing on the recall's petition language. The board rejected the recall petition for circulation on a 2-2 vote.[1]
Proponents of the recall effort criticized Churches over her vote in favor of House Bill 4474.[2][3]
Churches was elected to the state House in 2022. She defeated Bob Howey (R) in the general election with 50.8% of the vote.
Recall supporters
Sebastian Palamara filed the recall petition against Churches on July 12, 2023, due to her vote in favor of House Bill 4474.[4] According to Michigan Advance, the legislation would "expand the definition of hate crimes to include violence on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, age and disability."[4]
Recall opponents
After the recall was announced, Churches posted on Twitter the following response:[5]
“ |
Republicans are attempting to recall me along with four other Democratic state house legislators. All of us women. This coordinated attack is a distraction from the real issues facing Michigan families and the progress Democrats are making in Michigan.[6] |
