My name is Jake Seastrand, and I am running for Salt Lake City City Council in District 3. I believe that our neighborhoods—from the Avenues and Capitol Hill to Marmalade—are the heart of our city. My vision is to champion a community that is safe, sustainable, and prosperous for every resident, blending our rich history with a forward-looking approach to growth. My experience in the Justice Court has given me a unique, firsthand perspective on the challenges our neighbors face every day, from housing instability to mental health crises. This has shaped my commitment to public service, and I am focused on practical solutions that balance compassion with effective governance.
My campaign focuses on a few key areas to improve Salt Lake City. My vision addresses our housing crisis by making our neighborhoods more affordable. I will work to end outdated zoning laws that limit housing types and advocate for policies that create a home for everyone who builds our community. I'm also passionate about supporting local entrepreneurs. My Homegrown Economy initiative aims to modernize city regulations to help home-based and mobile businesses thrive. Finally, I believe in a compassionate approach to public safety. Support law enforcement and addressing the root causes of crime through coordinated services for housing, mental health, and substance abuse. I will champion our Green space by enhancing, building and improving.
Qualities and principles I believe are most important for an elected official are a commitment to common sense, compassion, and a forward-looking vision. My campaign is rooted in these values.
  • Common Sense: I believe in practical, effective governance. This means being a good steward of taxpayer money and focusing on tangible results, whether that's in building more affordable housing or streamlining city services for entrepreneurs.
  • Compassion: A great city is an inclusive city. I believe in treating all residents with dignity and respect, especially our most vulnerable. My work in the Justice Court has shown me the importance of a compassionate approach to public safety and addressing issues like homelessness and mental health.
  • Vision: A leader must have a vision for the future. My campaign is built on looking forward and preparing Salt Lake City for the next generation. This means embracing smart growth, fostering a modern economy, and ensuring our city remains a place of opportunity for everyone.
I worked in the warehouse for a book publisher. I received orders, picked the books and got them ready to ship. It was my first job I had while in High School.
I am proud of my experience working in the Justice Court. It has given me an invaluable firsthand perspective on the challenges our neighbors face, from housing instability to mental health crises. This experience has deepened my commitment to public service and has directly shaped my campaign's focus on compassionate and practical solutions for our community.
