Jamaal was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1985. He received a bachelor's degree from California State University, Northridge, and a master's degree from Lasell University.

Jamaal began his career working with seniors in various assisted living facilities dedicating many years to enhancing the quality of life for all seniors. To help put himself through school, he worked as a server, and dishwasher, and was later promoted to various lead/supervisory roles as a result of his hard work. In 2014, Jamaal decided to change his career to focus on serving students in the university setting and has been working with students ever since.

Jamaal has always been heavily involved in the political process. He prides himself on being a voting rights and human rights advocate. He volunteered for the Hillary for America campaign as well as the Joe Biden/Kamala Harris 2020 campaign.
  • In the richest country on the planet, no one should go bankrupt or lose their healthcare because they lost their job. If we have learned anything over the last two years, it is that healthcare should not be tied to employment. We must fight to add a public option to ObamaCare.
  • The housing crisis is prevalent across all states regardless of how we perceive them as red or blue. When I am elected to Congress, I will fight to increase low-income housing as well as devote resources that addresses the root causes of homelessness to include access to mental health resources as well as substance abuse resources.
  • Big banks should not be building profits on the backs of the people. When I am elected to Congress, I will fight to cap interest rates on credit cards as well as cap overdraft fees. I will also work to establish postal banking so that everyone in the United States has access to banking without having to pay outrageous fees to cash their pay check.
Healthcare, housing/homelessness crisis, student loan debt, financial burdens, criminal justice reform, climate change.
I look up to my late aunt Darlene. She was an educator that dedicated her life to reaching each and every one of her students. She never gave up on her students and always made herself available (day or night) by installing a separate phone line in her home for her students to call. I see myself doing something similar for my constituents. if I am fortunate enough to be elected to this seat, I will make myself available by responding to emails, being available on social media, and holding monthly town hall meetings.
Honesty, integrity, ability to compromise when possible, humility, resilient.
I am humble, kind, funny, engaging, a good listener, and I stand up for what I believe in.
The people in my district know that every day I showed up for work, it was to fight for the people. That I always led with integrity and stood by the principles that make our district the best in California.
The first historical event that happened in my lifetime that I remember was the Hillary Clinton speech in Beijing. I was almost 10 years old, but I remember my mom telling me how impactful that speech was for women across the globe, and how Mrs. Clinton broke the mold for how traditional First Ladies were to behave. My mom emphasized the importance of being bold and being "you" just as Mrs. Clinton had when she delivered that famous speech.
My very first job was as a server/dishwasher in a retirement home. I worked for that organization for approximately six years. It was one of the best jobs I had because the seniors I worked for were like family.
The greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade include the fight to preserve democracy as well as climate change.
Elijah Cummings, John Lewis, Karen Bass, Maxine Waters, Eric Swalwell, Ruben Gallego, AOC.
