James Waldo Ackerman (1926-1984) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois and the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois.

Ackerman was nominated by President Gerald Ford on June 18, 1976, to a seat vacated by Harlington Wood Jr.; he was confirmed by the Senate on July 2, 1976, and received commission that same day. He served the Southern District of Illinois until he was reassigned to the Central District of Illinois on March 31, 1979. From 1982-1984, he served as the chief judge until his death on November 23, 1984.[1] Ackerman was succeeded in this position by Richard Mills.
