When he was 18, James did something not many high schoolers do as they're about to walk the stage - he ran for school board, and won. Now as the youngest LGBTQ+ elected official in California, he is a fighter for public education and leading the next generation. James is a student leader, working on many boards of directors (such as the California State Student Association and the San Francisco State Foundation), and a community champion, working for various community nonprofits and organizations. As an Assemblymember, James will not only fight for full and fair funding of our public schools but will fight for public transit, will battle the housing crisis head on, and will change the dynamic of the Assembly. James lives in San Leandro, is a renter, has two cats, and is an unapologetic transit nerd.
  • We need to fully fund PreK-12 Education
  • We need to hold corporate and fossil fuel powers accountable
  • James will usher in the next generation of leadership at just 21 years old

We have an opportunity to address the racial, environmental, and political mandate before us. It's time to take it.
I look up to the women in my life that have made me who I am. Deitra Atkins, who taught me grace. Edwina Smith, who taught me to be who I am and own it. Alison Balano, who taught me compassion. Jennifer Brouhard, who taught me service. Glenna Wurm, who taught me community and compassion. And, of course, many many more.
I fondly remember being up close to the TV on the night of November 6, 2012 when President Obama won re-election. I was only eleven at the time.
My very first job was as the Environmental Justice and Policy Coordinator for Associated Students at San Francisco State University, which I held for over a year before moving to Government & Community Relations.
