James Atterholt (b. May 14, 1962) is the former chairman of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. He was appointed to the position by Governor Eric Holcomb (R) on February 9, 2017, to succeed Carol Stephan, who retired from the commission on January 1, 2017.[1][2] Atterholt retired from the commission on January 12, 2018.[3]

Atterholt previously served on the commission from June 2009 until his appointment as chief of staff for Gov. Mike Pence (R) in May 2014.[4]

After graduating from college in 1986, Atterholt went on to serve in various roles in the congressional offices for Indiana's fifth district until 2002, including chief of staff and district director. He was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1998, serving four years before leaving to become director of government affairs at AT&T Indiana for a year. In 2005, he was named Indiana Insurance Commissioner and remained in that position until June 2009 when he was appointed to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. Atterholt left the commission in May 2014 in order to serve as chief of staff to former Gov. Mike Pence (R). He was reappointed to the commission in February 2017.[1][5]

Political career

Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (2009-2014; 2017-2018)

Atterholt was first appointed to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in June 2009 and served until May 2014. He was reappointed to the commission on February 9, 2017, to succeed Carol Stephan, who retired from the commission on January 1, 2017.[1][2][4] Atterholt retired from the commission on January 12, 2018.[3]

Indiana Insurance Commissioner (2005-2009)

Atterholt served as the Indiana commissioner of insurance from 2005 to 2009.

Indiana House of Representatives (1998-2002)

Atterholt served two terms in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1998-2002. During that time he was on the House Commerce, Economic Development and Technology Committee, Environmental Affairs Committee, and Labor Committee.[4]

Atterholt was reappointed to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission on February 9, 2017 by Gov. Eric Holcomb (R).[1]

2010

Atterholt was appointed to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission on June 22, 2009 by Gov. Mitch Daniels (R).[4][4]

2005

Atterholt was appointed as the Indiana insurance commissioner in 2005.[6] Referring to Atterholt's tenure, Gov. Mitch Daniels stated, “Jim totally transformed the department from a source of constant criticism to a nationally recognized source of pride. In both the core mission of consumer protection and the improvement of Indiana as a good environment for insurance jobs, everyone agrees that his tenure has been a spectacular success.”
