James O. Browning

James O. Browning is an Article III federal judge for the United States Court for the District of New Mexico. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. Prior to appointment, he was the Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Mexico.[1]
On January 21, 2025, Browning announced he would assume senior status on February 1, 2026.[2]
Early life and education
Born in Levelland, Texas, Browning graduated from Yale University with his bachelor's degree in 1978 and from the University of Virginia Law School with his Juris Doctor degree in 1981.[1]
Professional career
Browning served as a law clerk for former Federal Appeals Judge Collins Seitz in the United States Third Circuit Court of Appeals from 1981 to 1982 and then as clerk for Former United States Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell from 1982 to 1983. From 1983 to 2003, Browning was in private practice in the State of New Mexico and in 1987 served as Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Mexico.[1]
Judicial career
District of New Mexico
Browning was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico by President George W. Bush on April 28, 2003, to a seat vacated by Curtis Hansen as Hansen went on senior status. Browning was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 31, 2003 on a Senate vote and received commission on August 1, 2003.[3]
