James Chris Cacheris was a federal judge with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He joined the court in 1981 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Cacheris served as a senior judge with the court from 1998 to 2018.

Early life and education

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cacheris graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with his bachelor's degree in 1955 and from the George Washington University Law School with his J.D. in 1960.[1]

Cacheris was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by President Ronald Reagan on October 20, 1981, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. Cacheris was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on November 24, 1981, and he received his commission on December 1, 1981. Cacheris served as chief judge of the court from 1991 to 1997. He elected to take senior status beginning on March 30, 1998. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Gerald Lee.[1][2]
