James Clyburn (Democratic Party) is a member of the U.S. House, representing South Carolina's 6th Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 1993. His current term ends on January 3, 2027.

Clyburn (Democratic Party) is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent South Carolina's 6th Congressional District. He declared candidacy for the 2026 election.[source]

Biography

Clyburn was born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1940[1] . He earned his bachelor's degree in history from South Carolina State College, Orangeburg, in 1962.[2][3] Clyburn's previous work experience included working as a teacher, an employment counselor, and as a newspaper publisher. Clyburn served in various positions state government commissions, including the South Carolina State Employment Security Commission, the South Carolina State Commission for Farm Workers, and the South Carolina Human Affairs Commissioner, and also worked as a staff member for Gov. John C. West (D).[1] In 2018, Clyburn was elected to serve as House Majority Whip for the 116th Congress.[4] This role is the third-ranking leadership position in the House, behind the speaker and the majority leader. [5] He served in this position until 2023.
