James Craft

James Craft is a judge of the 47th Circuit Court in Kentucky. He was appointed by Republican Governor Matt Bevin on July 5, 2016, to succeed Samuel T. Wright III, who joined the Kentucky Supreme Court.[1] At the time of his appointment, Craft was already running for election to the position. He won the seat in the general election on November 8, 2016.
Biography
Craft received a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky in 1990 and a J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley School of Law in 1994.[2]

Kentucky held nonpartisan elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on May 17, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was January 26, 2016.[3] Incumbent James Craft defeated Darrell Hall in the Kentucky 47th Circuit Court general election.[4]

Selection method

Judges of the Kentucky Circuit Courts are elected to eight-year terms in nonpartisan elections. They must run for re-election if they wish to serve subsequent terms.[5]
The chief judge is selected by his or her peers and serves a two-year term.[5]
Qualifications
In order to serve on this court, a judge must be:[5]
- a U.S. citizen;
- a resident of the represented district for at least two years; and
- licensed to practice law for at least eight years.
