James D. Norlander is a judge for the 10th District Court in Calhoun County, Michigan.[1] He was appointed to the court by Republican Governor Rick Snyder on June 25, 2014, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge John Holmes. Norlander ran for election to the court in 2016 to serve out the remainder of Holmes' term.[2]

Education

Norlander received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1969 and his J.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1973.[2][3]

Career

Before his appointment to the court, Norlander practiced law with The Law Firm of Mumford, Schubel, Norlander, Macfarlane and Barnett, PLLC in Battle Creek, Mich. He has also previously served as a prosecutor for Calhoun County from 1977 to 1980.[2][3]

Michigan held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election occurred on August 2, 2016. The candidate filing deadline for incumbents was March 21, and the deadline for non-incumbents was April 19.[4] Incumbent James D. Norlander ran unopposed in the 10th District (partial term) general election.[5]

Judges of the Michigan District Courts are each elected to six-year terms.[6] The elections for this court are nonpartisan contested elections. To serve on this court, a judge must be a qualified elector of the district, licensed to practice law in the state, under the age of 70, and have five years of experience practicing law.
