Dr. Jim Duffee is a pediatrician and child psychiatrist who has worked to improve the lives of children, families, and communities for since 1990. He is the founding physician of Rocking Horse Community Health Center in Springfield and, in 2008. was recognized by the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics as the Outstanding Pediatrician of the Year. Now retired from clinicial practice, he lives with his wife of 42 years in rural Clark County. He holds a clinical appointment in the Department of Pediatrics at Boonschoft School of Medicine and maintains activities and interests in public health and bioethics. He is a member of the Medical Response Corps of Clark County.
As a pediatrician, my focus has always been maternal, child, and family health. However, families live in communities and are influenced by social drivers such as poverty, environmental quality, infrastructure (broadband, public transportation), and community violence. These social risk factors are influenced by policies that, when unfair, lead to unequal opportunity. Structural racism is a socail driver that underlies many inequities, including quality and length of life. Families flourish when they have fair opportunity to food, housing, education, and employment with a wage that supports economic stability. As a representative, I will work for equtiy in such areas as school funding, paid family leave, early child care, LGBTQ+ rights, and mental health/substance abuse recovery services. Because healthcare and education together make up most of the state expenditure budget, my experience and areas of expertice will help me shape policies that will allow families to flourish.
