James E. Shadid is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. He was nominated by President President Barack Obama in May 2010. Shadid served as chief judge of the court from 2012 to 2019. He assumed senior status on September 27, 2024. Jonathan E. Hawley was nominated by President Joe Biden (D) to replace Shadid on the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois on July 8, 2024.[1] Previously, he was a judge on the Tenth Circuit of Illinois.[2][3]

Early life and education
Judge Shadid received his J.D. from The John Marshall Law School in 1983 and his B.S. from Bradley University in 1979.[4]

In February 2010 Senator Dick Durbin recommended Shadid to President Obama for a seat on the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois.[5] On May 27, 2010, President Obama nominated Shadid to the Central District of Illinois to replace Michael Mihm.[6] Obama commented on the nomination, stating, "I am proud to nominate these outstanding individuals to serve on the District Court bench. I am confident they will serve the people of North Carolina and Illinois with distinction.”[4]
Shadid received a rating of "Qualified" from the substantial majority of the American Bar Association, and a rating of "Well Qualified" from the minority. He had a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 15, 2010 and you can find his hearing transcript here.[7] He was moved out of committee on a voice vote on December 1, 2010.[8]

Shadid's nomination was returned to the President at the end of the 111th Congress. Shadid was resubmitted by the President as a nomination for federal Circuit Court on Wednesday, January 5, 2011.[9] Shadid was confirmed to his position by the U.S. Senate on March 7, 2011 by an 89-0 vote.[10]
Shadid served as chief judge of the court from 2012 to 2019.[3]
