- Excerpt: "We need to stop creating legislation that drives the small farmer out of business and remove current regulations that have a negative impact our agricultural community. All too often, regulations make farming unprofitable. Government agencies are playing a shell game in the interest of revenue (tax dollars). ...Government needs to quit regulating the farmer and focus on proper water management."
- Business and Occupation Tax
- Excerpt: "In order for the state of Washington to economically compete in the global market, we need to revive manufacturing and business. In order to do this we must eliminate the business and occupation tax, which discourages capital investment by our businesses and discourages purchases of capital equipment that are directly related to growth."
- Budget
- Excerpt: "Across the board budget cuts by percentages, be it 2%, 3% or what ever is the wrong approach. The state budget is similar to a Boy Scout who is constrained by a fixed-size knapsack. He must fill it with the most valuable items and keep the weight of the knapsack to less than 50lbs. He must determine the number of each item to include so that the total weight is less than or equal to a given limit and the total value is as large as possible. ...I am the only candidate that has the knowledge and experience to prioritize our budget in order to keep the essential services without raising taxes."

- Excerpt: "As tax payers we fund our public universities and community colleges. If we are paying for these institutions, it is only right that they should be made available to Washington State residents before allowing admission to foreign students. Like charity, education begins at home. ...We are losing ground in the academic arena to other countries. We need to take a serious look at various alternatives. In the U.S., demand for a competitively educated workforce is high. Parents are insecure about their children’s employment prospects, having read repeatedly that there will be “two societies” in the future: high-paid knowledge workers and low-paid service workers."

- Excerpt: "Given our current national debt; the need to be able to compete in a global society, we must have effective transportation systems. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal provided jobs for the unemployed and the Tennessee Valley Authority has been a model for development of Third World Countries. If we created a transportation model, similar to the TVA, the issues of too many agencies would be eliminated."
- Veterans
- Excerpt: "With current state of our economy and the projected recession, we need to seriously address how we are going to assist our returning Veterans in regards to employment and health care issues. If elected I will do everything possible to see that those that served will receive the support they deserve."

Vaughn ran in the 2012 election for Washington State Senate, District 2. Vaughn was defeated by Bruce L. Lachney and incumbent Randi Becker in the August 7 blanket primary election. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[2][3]
