Campaign themes

2016

Burgess' campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

  • As your State Representative, I will work to address the social and economic realities of both school districts. Milton and Randolph serve many ELL students and the state resources do not match that challenge. The presence of these students and their families in our district provide us with the diversity which make our towns great places to live and work, and we must ensure that the adequate financial resources are provided to us from the Commonwealth. I will also work to make sure music and the arts are a priority. Exposure to music education for all students has been proven to have a positive effect on performance across the board in all areas of the curriculum.

Public Safety

  • Our district is fortunate. We have some of the best trained police officers and firefighters in the Commonwealth. If we are to learn anything from what is happening in the world today, it is that training across cultural boundaries is fundamental to establishing and maintaining communication and building trust in relationships between the citizens of the communities and those who have chosen to protect them. We can create communities where we acknowledge that we all come from different backgrounds and have different life experiences. We can respect and appreciate the difficult job of law enforcement by providing the right training and equipment. Most people in law enforcement that I know understand and respect the rights of the people which they serve, many have grown up in the communities where they work. Protecting the civil rights of all of our citizens and our police should be and is I believe the corner stone of policing.

Water Supply

  • We must remain vigilant to make sure that the resource and quality of our water supply is protected, increased and improved. Working to ensure that state and federal monies are made available to the district would be critical to help offset costs to rate payers of a new treatment plant in Randolph and the major capital improvements that the MWRA will be undertaking in Milton’s case. Clean water in our homes should not be taken for granted. With the new mandated storm water regulations that require runoff to be discharged back into the ground, it is more important than ever to ensure protection of our wetlands that filter this runoff.

Environment

  • We are blessed in the district to have thousands of acres of the Blue Hills Reservation. It deserves our protection and our communities need to seek more resources to increase access including to those with disabilities. I will work leadership in the legislature for an increase in what Milton and Randolph receive in the way of PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes). We must continue to fight to maintain and preserve this treasured sanctuary so that future generations may enjoy the richness of the hills and pond s and the incredible view from the top of Big Blue.
  • With the strengthening of habitat of the Neponset River, the State plays a critical role in addressing this ecosystem. The river is clearer than it has been in a century. Only state awareness will make sure that what happens up stream does not negatively impact our district. Much has been done to allow public access to the Neponset, I will work with those stakeholders to see what can be done and where appropriate greater access and awareness of this gem.

Civil Rights

  • I grew up and have lived my entire life in the town of Randolph. I understand the changes that the communities of Randolph and Milton have experienced in terms of demographics. Our population reflects the larger world. It provides our children the opportunity to live and learn next to one another without regard for cultural differences. I believe the richness and diversity of our communities are what makes us great places to live and work. I look at the broad spectrum of people supporting my candidacy. Asian, Haitian, Caucasian, Latino, African American, Gay or Straight, Older or Younger, townies and newcomers alike. This can only strengthen us as a community. We may have different opinions and backgrounds but we can live together with respect and without fear. My entire public life I have always held at my core, the belief that all of us are important and that in all my decisions, actions, and way I live, all of us should be allowed to grow and seek our fullest potential as Americans. Weather people knew it or not, I felt the sting of bigotry and that has shaped me. We shall not go backwards as a community or as a country.[1]
