James Gowans (b. October 25, 1929) was a Democratic member of the Utah House of Representatives, representing District 21. He was defeated in the November 2, 2010, general election.

Gowans joined the Utah State House of Representatives in 1993. He served in that position until 2011, spending time as Minority Whip.

Gowans was the Acting Superintendent of Schools for the Tooele District from 1986 to 1987. He then worked for Settlement Canyon Irrigation Company from 1990 to 19992. He has also worked as a rancher.

Gowans earned his B.S. in education from Utah State University. He then attended Graduate Work at the University of Utah, the University of California, and Brigham Young University.

Elections

2010

Gowans was defeated by Republican challenger Douglas Sagers on November 2, 2010[1].

2008

On November 4, 2008, Gowans won re-election to the Utah House of Representatives, District 21, defeating opponents Dan Egelund (R) and Jonathan Garrard (C).[2]

Gowans raised $17,619 for his campaign while Egelund raised $2,387 and Garrard raised $100.[3]
